Final of Design Competition

- Four Chinese students make souvenirs to the Swedish Pavilion

One hundred students stood in a design competition organized by Tongji, the Chinese Institute of Design in cooperation with Konstfack. Four of the students reached the final. Some of their products will be sold in the souvenir shop in the Swedish pavilion at World Expo in Shanghai.

Tongji University´s own jury selected in a first stage, a number of grants which have now been assessed by an international jury in which, among others, Lars Dafnäs, Design Director at IKEA, is included.

- I could never just by looking at them, determine whether the objects were created by Chinese or Swedish adolescents. I think young designers around the world are influenced by similar things and the same type of design. Several of the objects were very up to date and it is clear that the world has become more global, says Lars Dafnäs.

The students who participated in the contest were commissioned to create a product that is innovative, sustainable and useful in everyday life.

- It´s easy to find the funny innovative objects, but harder to create something that fills a demand. The level of contribution was generally quite high. The hardest parts is still there – choosing the right materials and create a high quality product, says Lars Dafnäs.

Left in the contest is Jing Liu with a teacup which has room for a tea bag, Linfeng Zhao with a combined fork and spoon, Junjie Liu with an energy – smart aromatherapy lamp and Wenchao Gao with cutlery where chopsticks are built-in. Some of the products will be available for sale in the Swedish pavilion during the exhibition period.

- 95 percent of visitors are expected to be Chinese, and by allowing Chinese designers to interpret the Swedish theme, we hope to be able to address the target group better, said Bob Lee from Konstfack, who is one of the initiators of the design competition.

The final winner will get to go on a field trip arranged by Scandinavian Perspective to study Swedish form and Crafts tradition. One of the finalists will also receive a newly designed electric bicycle from Höganäs. Prizes will be awarded in conjunction with the exhibition opening.

Cake of Sweden by Taste of Nordic

Cake of Sweden. What is that? Is it a cake? Is it a pastry? Is it a bun? April 6 marked the start of all home bakers in Sweden to participate in creating the most delicious, most Swedish pastry recipe. A jury will select the winning pastry which will be served at Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

Pastry makers across the country – from Ystad in the very south to Haparanda in the very north of Sweden – are urged to send in their most delicious recipes for the “cake” they think epitomizes Sweden. Following countrywide races the winner is named in the Cake of Sweden “grand finale” early May. The competition is organized by Spot and Tell and under the name Cake of Sweden by Taste of Nordic the winning pastry will be served and sold in the Swedish Pavilion’s Café during Expo 2010.

As Official Supplier Catering to the Swedish Pavilion at Expo 2010 Taste of Nordic will run the VIP restaurant on the top floor and also the public café at ground level. This is where the Expo visitors may come to enjoy a traditional “Swedish Fika” – a cup of coffee (or tea) plus a bun, pastry or cake. The winning pastry will be sold in the café starting with Sweden’s National Day 6 June and until 31 October.

Taste of Nordic bid winner, plus the accompanying free admission to Expo 2010, a guided tour of the Swedish pavilion and exhibition, and closing coffee with Cake of Sweden in the café. On Taste of Nordic’s page on Facebook, the participants are able to upload their own pictures and info about their pastries.

hm-blommigSome 60 guides will work at the Swedish pavilion during the World Expo in Shanghai running from May to October. They will represent Sweden wearing garments from H&Ms ecological spring collection, Garden Collection, on the way to shops right now.

-          We are very pleased that H&M enters as a Swedish sponsor. Swedish design represents a vital component and strength of the Swedish participation under the theme Spirit of Innovation. A visit from the Expo bureau

Expo bureau delegation and model of the Swedish pavilionA delegation from the Chinese Expo Bureau, responsible for the realization of Expo 2010 in Shanghai, chose to visit Sweden on their trip to Europe among only three other countries.

They stayed in Sweden for 3 days and had the opportunity to meet partners, participants and organisers in connection to the Swedish Committee. They were also invited to participate in a press conference on the 4th of February on the occasion of the launch of the Swedish program and exhibition at the world Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

At the conference, media had the chance of asking the Expo bureau questions regarding the world exposition.

The delegation took great interest in the display of coming activities as well as the pavilion and the exhibition itself that they described as:

-Different – in a good way!

The effort to create an interest for the Swedish Exhibition and program as well as a discussion on problems and solutions did not pass unnoticed and the delegation was keen on asking questions and took great interest in the discussions following.

As the party left Sweden on the morning of February 5th, they left to undertake an unimaginable task of coordinating the biggest world exposition ever, we wish them good luck!

Well knitted Sweden!

vadstena2To all knitting enthusiasts from north to the south of Sweden we wish to express our gratitude for your wonderful contributions to “Knit for Sweden”.

More than a month ago we asked Swedish knit enthusiasts to knit mittens for the Swedish pavilion at the world exposition and we got response. Every mitten has been a display of creativity and skill and they will surely grace the exhibition at the Swedish pavilion during Expo 2010.

Many of the contributors have written a few lines and one of them is Margareta Semborn from Linköping, born 1931, who writes:margaretasemborn1

“After I read about the theme of the Swedish pavilion exhibition my thoughts turned to my childhood’s winters in Norrland – snow, chill, northern lights and long nights. That is why my contribution is dark blue like the northern sky in winter time and pink and white like the aura of the northern lights so often was”.

Contributions have arrived from young as well as old, from handicraft unions and from school classes. We are moved and impresses by the quality and width of Swedish craftsmanship and the will to contribute to an exhibition that will inspire and warmth the Chinese visitors at Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

A journey for Sweden

guidetraningThe first training sessions of the guides for the Swedish pavilion at world exhibition are finalized. Two days of intense work in Shanghai and in Stockholm will serve as the foundation for a Sweden know-how that will meet an audience of over 15 000 visitors per day during a period of 6 months.

The training has been a journey through Sweden as a nation, as well as a journey in time and space. The education is based on substantial knowledge on both Sweden and China and on how we build relations based on our values in communication with the surrounding world.

Lecturers from Swedish authorities, business society, organizations and China connoisseurs along with the Swedish Committee for Expo 2010 have jointly and in discussion with one another and the guides, elucidated Sweden´s participation at the world exposition, this time as well as in the past.

When asked – Do you feel ready for this? Eric Osterman, one of the selected guides’s answered:guidetraning-shanghai2

-          It feels incredibly exciting, I´m sure this assignment will lead to life long memories. There are still some things that are not clear to me, for instance what our tasks will be exactly and housing, but this will work out shortly.

The last and final training will take place in Shanghai, at the pavilion site. Once there, focus will be on practical implements and application of previous sessions. Hopefully the training will inspire all to become ambassadors for the small country with the large ideas.
